Midweek Thoughts

Message: What’s in a Name?

Scripture: Psalm 23, Acts 4:5-12

14-F (Marriage Amendment) Forum following worship

Midweek Thoughts:

The words of Psalm 23 are very familiar.  They speak a truth that we ourselves sometimes find difficulty uttering to God.  Rereading this Psalm today the following words spoke to me:

“The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside still waters;
he restores my soul.
He leads me in right paths
 for his name’s sake.”

Regardless of what is happening in our personal lives, what is happening in our congregation, our denomination, our world, God is our Shepherd.  God’s name invokes more than just respect but a place to find solace in the midst of our day-to-day confusion.

Perhaps that is why this Psalm is so familiar.  Perhaps that is why we often read it at funerals.  Despite what seems out of our control, out of our own understanding, God is with us in the midst as our shepherd.  I hope this week you can invoke God’s name and feel the comfort of a loving shepherd leading you to green pasture and restoring your soul. I pray that we can walk the right paths together.
